A Miami judge has set a July trial date for a Utah fugitive accused of illegally possessing a gun and assaulting Florida police.
Utahn Larkin Baggett is accused of pointing a semiautomatic rifle at a team of five local and federal police officers on March 10, forcing them to open fire.
Baggett suffered multiple gunshot wounds that left him hospitalized in critical condition. He was released from a hospital last week and booked in to jail.
On Friday, a judge set a two-week trial for July 6.
Police were searching for Baggett in the Florida Keys because he had fled Utah to avoid a trial on federal environmental charges.
Prosecutors contend Baggett dumped hazardous materials in the sewers outside his Salt Lake City truck-wash business, Chemical Consultants Inc. Baggett pleaded not guilty to the charges in September 2007.
At the time, prosecutors raised concerns about the firearms owned by Baggett and threatening comments he had made. A judge freed Baggett pending trial because he had no record of violence.
Following the Florida trial, Baggett will be returned to Utah.
