UTAH
BASEBALL: A six-run seventh inning lifted No. 15 TCU to a 10-5 win over Utah on Friday at Fort Worth, Texas.
Down 1-0 after Matt Vern's home run in the fourth, Utah took a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning behind a two-RBI double from Tyler Yagi.
The Horned Frogs tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth before taking a 10-4 lead in the seventh inning.
Utah rallied in the late innings, leaving two on base in the eighth before Nick Kuroczko hit an RBI single with two runners on in the ninth to score pinch hitter Kyle Myers, who reached base with a walk.
Corey Shimada, Yagi, Kuroczko and C.J. Cron each had a pair of hits to lead the Utes.
Ute starter Brian Budrow pitched into the seventh inning, striking out three in the loss to go to 4-4 on the season. Greg Krause, Tyler Andersen and Robert Chimpky also pitched for Utah. TCU's Trent Appleby earned his third win of the year.
The Utes and TCU play the second of the three-game series on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. MDT.
SOFTBALL: Junior center fielder Kara Foster hit a first-inning grand slam and freshman Joni Cook pitched her fifth complete game of the season and the Utes earned a 5-2 win against New Mexico Friday at Ute Softball Field in Salt Lake City.
Utah (22-30, 4-9 MWC) drew three walks to open the first inning then Foster jolted her 53rd career home run over the left-field fence to give the Utes a 4-0 lead before recording an out.
Cook's fifth complete game this season saw her allow two earned runs on four hits as she faced 25 Lobo hitters. The Eagle Idaho native won her second consecutive decision to improve to 6-10 this season.
Freshman third baseman Whitney Holm hit her 10th home run of the season to lead off the fifth inning, scoring Utah's final run of the contest.
Utah concludes its regular season today at 1 p.m. against the Lobos at Ute Softball Field. Seniors Angie Boardman, Sharee Fonoti, Staci Hemingway, Andrea Hoffman and Bonnie Muir will be honored in a post-game ceremony.
