High school track: Rabbits, North Sanpete take Region 8 track titles

SALEM — Delta High has been considered a team title favorite going into next week's state track meet at BYU. The Rabbits showed fine championship form in the Region 8 meet this week at Salem Hills High.

Delta coasted to the boys title on Thursday afternoon, while North Sanpete claimed the girls team title.

Brayden Brunson buoyed the Rabbits with a strong performance in the sprints. He swept the 100, 200 and 400 meters. Brunson won the 100 in 11.11 seconds, took first in the 200 with a time of 22.66 and claimed victory in the 400 after finishing in 50.80.

Salem Hills produced a pair of multiple event winners in Tyler Gebert and Tucker Pinder. Gebert won both the 1,600 and 3,200 — finishing in 4:49.93 in the 1,600 and crossing the line in 10:24.01 in the 3,200. Pinder won the 800 with a time of 2:06.07 and finished in 41.87 to claim victory in the 300 hurdles.

North Sanpete was led by a trio of winners in capturing the region title. Shyanne Ison won the 100 after finishing in 13.13 seconds and also took the 200 with a time of 26.71. Rebekah Boekweg mirrored Gebert's distance sweep, finishing in 5:34.38 to win the 1,600 and in 11:54.49 to win the 3,200. Jessica Lindow was strong in the throws, claiming victory in the discus with a throw of 116 feet, 6 inches, and winning the shot put after throwing a distance of 38 feet.

Delta senior Jaclyn Jones earned a pair of wins in the high jump and long jump. Jones won the high jump after clearing a 5-foot-6 height and finished first in the long jump after going a distance of 17 feet, 3.75 inches.
