Track athletes around the state had their last chance to get ready for next week's state meet in various region meets this week. Here are highlights from some meets that wrapped up on Thursday afternoon:
Region 1
At Syracuse, the boys and girls teams for Davis cruised to both team titles after overwhelming their region competition with sheer depth once again...
Kyler Sprague led the Darts' boys team with a sweep of the hurdles. Sprague won in the 110 hurdles after finishing in 15.16 seconds and claimed the 300 hurdles with a time of 40.90 seconds. Davis enjoyed big performances in the field events. Tony Hill won the shot put after throwing 54 feet and 9 inches. Ryan Avery prevailed in the long jump, going 22 feet and 4.25 inches to win. Alec Pectol earned a victory in the high jump after clearing a 6 foot 6 height.
On the girls' side, depth made the most difference for the Darts. Davis also produced individual winners in Brooke Jensen, who finished in 14.79 to win the 100 hurdles, and Megan Hedquist, who claimed the 1600 meters with a time of 5:17.53.
Viewmont senior Bailee Whitworth won the long jump after going a distance of 17 feet and 5 inches. Whitworth also won the 100 after finishing in 12...31 and the 200 with a time of 24.97.
Syracuse junior Tyrell Yardley swept the 100, 200 and 400. He claimed first in the 100 with a time of 10.60, won the 200 after finishing in 21.92 and prevailed in the 400 after crossing the line in 51.06. Yardley's winning times in the 100 and 200 were wind-aided.
Region 2
At Jordan, Jeff Daw earned victories in the 100, 200 and 400 meters to help lift Skyline's boys team to a Region 2 title.
Daw won the 100 with a time of 11.10 seconds, prevailed in the 200 in 22.16 and claimed the top spot in the 400 after finishing in 49.37. Taylorsville senior Mike Staker also stood out among the boys athletes, winning in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.43 seconds and claiming victory in the high jump by clearing 6 feet, 4 inches.
Brighton claimed the girls team title on the strength of a strong performance in the sprints. Leading the way for the Bengals were Kylie Hirschi and Elizabeth Butler. Hirschi won the 100 hurdles after finishing in 15.20 seconds and tied for first in the 300 with Hillcrest junior Allysa Hansen after both crossed the line with times of 45.16. Butler won the 200 after finishing in 26.08 and claimed the 400 with a time of 59.45.
