UTAH

SOFTBALL: Utah senior first baseman Staci Hemingway has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII team for the second consecutive season, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Hemingway was named to the first team after earning a second-team selection last season. The starter is hitting .292 on the year with 10 doubles, four home runs and 22 RBI. She is pursuing a Master of Science degree in Exercise and Sport Science with an emphasis on psychosocial aspects of sport after earning a Bachelor of Science in sports management in December of 2008.

Hemingway went 3-for-6 at the plate as the University of Utah softball team split a twin bill against Colorado State, winning the first game 12-3 and dropping the second, 5-3, in a pair of Mountain West Conference games Thursday at Ute Softball Field.

Utah (21-30, 3-9 MWC) was led on the offensive attack by Hemingway's 3-for-6 day at the plate with a trio of singles. Senior center fielder Kara Foster also was 3-for-6, including her 52nd career home run, 17th of the season, while driving in a pair of runs. Freshman left fielder Hannah Clements was 4-for-8 with three runs scored and one driven in.

In the first game, the Utes pounded 15 hits for a season-high-tying 12 runs against the Rams for their third MWC victory of the season at a 12-3 margin over Colorado State.

Joni Cook picked up the win after pitching 5.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits and giving up two walks while striking out two after facing 26 Ram hitters. The Eagle, Idaho native improved to 5-10 when factoring into decisions this season.

Ashley Smuda closed the game for the Utes by pitching the final 1.2 innings of the game, facing six CSU hitters. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native allowed only one hit while registering a pair of strikeouts.

The Rams put together a three-run fourth inning before the Utes got an RBI single by Clements and she later scored along with Brooke Olson after an error by the CSU shortstop to equal the score after five innings. Unfortunately, CSU scored one run in both the sixth and seventh innings to take a 5-3 victory.

BYU

SOFTBALL: After clinching the MWC title, the BYU softball team defeated New Mexico at Miller Park 6-3 with all six runs coming from Cougar slugger Jessica Purcell. The Cougars are now 38-15 and 11-1 in Mountain West Conference play.
