TRACK AND FIELD:Wade Nielson recorded Southern Utah's 11th regional qualifying mark while Sharae Hill broke the school record in the women's 100-meter dash to highlight the Thunderbirds' success at the Utah Twilight Invitational meet on Tuesday night in Salt Lake City. The meet was the final competition for the Thunderbirds before The Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Cedar City, May 14-16.

Hill missed the school record in the 100 meters by .01 seconds last weekend, but left no doubt with a first-place finish of 11.97 in the race on Tuesday night. The mark was the first-ever, sub-12-second 100 meters recorded by a female student-athlete at Southern Utah University..

Nielson cleared the bar at 6-10.75 in the men's high jump, marking an NCAA qualifying height in the process. Nielson finished the event in second place as Utah State's Clint Silcock posted a 7 feet, 1/2 inch mark.

Chelsea Allen finished third in the women's 200 meters with a time of 24.86 and Kylie Murakami finished third in the women's triple jump (35-7.5), while Carlos Valle recorded SUU's other top-three finishes in the men's hammer (third, 161-3) and men's discus (second, 176-8.75).

Southern Utah will now turn its sights to a conference championship when the team hosts the 2009 Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships, May 14-16 in the Eccles Coliseum.

Also, Valle has been named The Summit League Track and Field Athlete of the Week after his performance at the SUU Invitational over the weekend. The award is the second for Valle this season and fifth for the Thunderbirds.

Valle was awarded the honor after throwing a first-place mark of 184 feet, 9 inches in the discus, setting a new school and facility record in the process. The mark also improved upon his NCAA regional qualifying throw from earlier this year. Valle went on to throw another personal best in the men's shot put, recording a distance of 53 feet, 6.25 inches to finish second in the event.
