OGDEN — Two women accused of participating in a severe beating of a girl, a video of which wound up on YouTube, have struck plea deals with prosecutors.

Alexandria Gutierrez, 18, and Paloma Lopez, 24, appeared Wednesday in 2nd District Court, where their attorney announced a resolution to the case. Both women pleaded guilty to a third-degree felony charge of riot.

"Do you understand the plea that you're entering here?" Judge Ernie Jones asked Gutierrez.

"Yes," she said, giving clipped answers to the judge's many questions and even cutting him off at one point to say "guilty."

Similarly, Lopez entered her guilty plea. Both women face the possibility of prison time when they are sentenced June 17. They left the courtroom surrounded by supporters.

Weber County prosecutors said Gutierrez and Lopez were both part of a group of girls who participated in the Dec. 2, 2008, beating of a 15-year-old girl. The victim was attacked on the 500 block of 28th Street, prosecutors said. A 15-year-old boy shot video of the beating on his cell phone and posted it on the Web site YouTube.

Ogden police said the girl was beaten so severely that she had to be hospitalized for several days. Ogden gang detectives claimed that the fight started when the victim called another girl a "scrap," which is an insult in gang culture.

The YouTube video made the rounds at Mount Ogden Middle School, where it came to the attention of police officers stationed there. Police said once officers began looking into it, the person that initially posted it took it down.

Three juveniles were referred to Ogden's 2nd District Juvenile Court to have their cases adjudicated.
