High school sports: Judge participation in 3A tournaments in doubt as school awaits test results

And just like that, Judge Memorial's participation in 3A athletic tournaments this spring could be in serious jeopardy.

Judge Memorial Catholic High released a statement on its Web site late this afternoon, confirming that one of its students is currently being tested for the H1N1 virus, commonly referred to as the swine flu, and that the test results won't be available until Tuesday.

It isn't known what course of action the private Catholic school on Salt Lake City's east bench will take should the student test positive. Last Saturday, the Park City School District announced that its eight schools, including Park City High, would remain closed for at least another week after test results showed that one of its students had tested positive.

The UHSAA is scheduled to meet this evening to decide whether Park City High's athletic teams can participate in their respective 3A tournaments even though their school remains closed, and such a decision could possibly apply to Judge Memorial, as well, if Judge is forced to stay closed beyond tomorrow.

Originally, Judge Memorial closed its doors for two days as a precautionary measure but hoped to re-open by Monday evening. Now, however, those plans have been put on hold for at least 24 hours.

Judge's boys soccer team is scheduled to play a 3A quarterfinal game in St. George against Desert Hills on Tuesday, but Judge coach Kelly Terrill confirmed his team won't be allowed to head south until after the tests results have come back Tuesday morning.

"Hopefully the student comes back negative, and then we'll head out tomorrow," he said.
