Carlos Valle just missed a first-place finish in the men's shot put, throwing a personal-best of 53 feet 6.25 inches, but blew away the competition in the discus with a first-place mark of 184 feet nine inches. His toss in the discus was 30 feet farther than his closest competition.

Two more former student-athletes, Nate Ott and Greg Watson battled in the men's hammer throw as Ott finished first with a toss of 205 feet ten inches to Watson's second-place throw of 187 feet.

Southern Utah will have one more meet before hosting the 2009 Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships, May 14-16. The final warm-up for the Thunderbirds is slated for Mary 6 when SUU takes part in the Utah Twilight Meet in Salt Lake City.

Utah

SOFTBALL: Kara Foster and Whitney Holm both had two hits and two RBI and Hannah Clements drove in three runs, but the University of Utah softball team dropped its road finale to UNLV, 12-8, Saturday at Eller Media Softball Stadium in Las Vegas.

Utah (20-29, 2-9 MWC) was led offensively throughout the game by the trio of Foster, Holm and Clements.

Foster went 2-for-4 at the plate, drove in two runs and scored three of her own. Holm also went 2-for-4 on the day and also had two assists at third base. Clements drove in a team-high three runs for her second three-RBI performance of the season. The freshman left fielder from Poway, Calif., also drove in three runs in the second game of a doubleheader at Utah State on April 7.

The Utes conclude their regular-season with a four-game homestand next weekend, beginning with a doubleheader Thursday against Colorado State. First pitch from Ute Softball Field is set for 2 p.m.

Westminster

LACROSSE: The Westminster men's lacrosse team saw their quest for a third straight RMLC championship end as Northern Colorado rallied for a 16-13 win on Saturday afternoon in Boulder, Colo. Westminster led 12-9 heading to the fourth quarter, only to see Northern Colorado score seven times in the fourth to claim their first conference championship.

Gian Sexsmith led the Griffins with four goals and added one assist. At one point in the first quarter, Sexsmith scored on three consecutive possessions. Matt Balk added a goal for Westminster and Lance Nielsen was dominant in the face-off circle.

Westminster must now wait to see if the receive an at-large berth into the MCLA National Tournament. The griffins are the defending national champion in the event.
