TRACK AND FIELD: There's nothing like spirited competition on the collegiate level between instate rival schools. That was case at Friday's BYU Twilight Meet. BYU, Utah State and Weber State got together in a format which had all events completed within a three hour time block.
Combined together, the Wildcat men and women produced 33 seasonal best marks and times, had seven more Big Sky Conference Outdoor Meet qualifying times, a new regional qualifier, and some drastic improvements along with some near school records.
Coach Dan Walker's men's squad had 14 seasonal bests and had three new qualifiers for the up coming Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships in Missoula, Montana May 13-16. and a new qualifier for the NCAA Regional Meet in Eugene, Oregon on May 29-30.
Brock Rose (Jr.-North Ogden, Utah) won both the 100 Meters (10.69,
season best) and the 200 Meters (21.18 personal and season best). His 200 Meters time is also an NCAA Regional Meet qualifying time, is the best mark in the Big Sky Conference this season and ranks as the fifth fastest time in WSU men's track history.
The women had a superb afternoon and evening as well. Coach Jim Blaisdell's crew had 19 season best marks and four new qualifying times and marks for the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track&Field Championships in less than two weeks.
"It was an almost incredible meet," said Blaisdell. "Each event was fiercely contested. BYU, Utah State and ourselves all had outstanding individual performances. It seemed each race or event produced a personal bests, conference bests and regional qualifying standards."
The Wildcats had three first place winners. Ally Dean (Jr.-Ogden, Utah) won the 400 Meter Hurdles in a career best 59.88. It is the best time in the Big Sky Conference this season and ranks as the second best time in Weber State women's track history. Cecilee Day (59.75) set the record in 2002. Dean also placed third in the 100 Meter dash in a time of 12.15. That is a Big Sky Conference qualifying time and a personal best time. It marked the first time she has run the 100 Meters in a competitive meet since her senior year in high school.
Michaela North (Jr.-Kennewick, Washington) continues to show her versatility. She won the Long Jump with season best leap of 18-11.25. It is just one-half inch off her career best and is a Big Sky Conference qualifying mark. She finished second in the 100 Meter Hurdles with a career best time of 14.15. That is the second best time in the Big Sky Conference this season.
