MLS roundup: Moreno scores 2 in United win
WASHINGTON — Jaime Moreno scored his first two goals of the season 10 minutes apart in the second half to lift D.C. United to a 2-1 win over FC Dallas on Saturday night.
Despite outplaying Dallas (2-4-1) for much of the game — including an 11-3 edge in shots on goal — United (3-1-3) trailed 1-0 at halftime thanks to Andre Rocha's goal in the 28th minute.
But Moreno, who missed his club's 3-2 comeback win over New York on Sunday with a strained Achilles' tendon, scored twice from 15 yards to help D.C. win consecutive games for the first time this season.
CREW 1, TORONTO FC 1: At Toronto, Chad Barrett scored in the 64th minute Saturday to give Toronto FC a 1-1 tie with Columbus that kept the MLS champion Crew winless. Toronto (3-2-3) extended its unbeaten streak to three games despite some defensive lapses. The Crew (0-2-5), who lost highly respected coach Sigi Schmid to the Seattle Sounders in the offseason, are off to the worst start in Columbus' 14-year history and the worst for a defending champion.
SOUNDERS 1, FIRE 1: At Bridgeview, Ill., the Seattle Sounders overcame the ejection of Fredy Montero to tie it and hang on for the final 20 minutes. Montero, who has a team-high three goals, got a red card in the 48th minute for elbowing Fire defender Gonzalo Segares in the head as both players leaped for the ball. In the 68th minute, Chicago (2-0-5) took a 1-0 lead on Marco Pappa's third goal of the season. The goal was also the first given up by Sounders goalkeeper Kasey Keller, whose season-opening shutout streak lasted 457 minutes. The former U.S. national team star is 4-0-1 with four shutouts. Six minutes later, Marshall was unmarked at the back post on Freddie Ljungberg's corner for his first goal since 2007.
GALAXY 1, RED BULLS 0: At Carson, Calif., Landon Donovan converted a penalty in the 39th minute and goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts prevented an own goal. The Galaxy (1-1-4) broke an eight-game winless streak that began in October and included U.S. Open Cup games.
CHIVAS USA 1, EARTHQUAKES 0: At Santa Clara, Calif., Justin Braun's first goal of the season was all the help Zach Thornton needed for his fifth straight shutout. Thornton made six saves for his league-leading fifth shutout.
