"We had exceptional performances in the 800-meter event and 1,500-meter event," Poole said. "There were several regional qualifying marks and personal bests which is really exciting."

The Cougars swept the top five places in the 800-meter event, with three athletes qualifying for regionals.

Lacey Cramer, the 800-meter national champion, won the event in an altitude adjusted time of 2:04.54. Nachelle Stewart finished right behind Cramer in an altitude-adjusted time of 2:07.56, and Sarah Katie Palmer, who earlier in the season ran the fifth-fastest time in the nation, recorded another solid time in the 1,500 meters with an altitude adjusted time of 4:18.14. She was followed by 10,000-meter specialist Cecily Lemmon, who regionally qualified in an altitude-adjusted time of 4:27.53.

Freshman Natalie Stewart brought in one more regional qualifying mark for BYU. Stewart ran the top time in the 400-meter event (53.85), placing her second in school history.

Next up for the Cougars will be the Utah Twilight Meet on Wednesday in Salt Lake City.

SOFTBALL: A walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning snapped BYU's 16-game winning streak, as the Cougars fell 5-4 against San Diego State on Friday night at San Diego.

BYU suffered its first loss in Mountain West Conference play at the hands of the Aztecs, after giving up a 4-0 lead in the seventh inning. San Diego State rallied to generate four runs and force extra innings, and an error put the base runner in scoring position before a single brought her home.

With the loss, the Cougars drop to 34-15 overall and 8-1 in conference play, marking their first loss since March 21. The Aztecs are now 32-16 and 9-3. The Cougars still hold the lead in the conference standings, but San Diego State cut sits only 1 1/2 games out.

Defensive errors proved to be BYU's downfall. The Cougars totaled five errors in the contest, three of which allowed the tying and go-ahead runs to score.

Sophomore pitcher Paige Affleck (17-8, 1.92) was charged with the loss, as she pitched three outs of relief in the contest. Starting pitcher Chrisite Zinanti gave up the four tying runs, three earned.

BYU's leading slugger, Jessica Purcell, got the Cougars on the board with a leadoff solo homer to left field in the second inning.

Andrea Ramirez tripled on a ball sliced up the left-center alley to bring in Angeline Quiocho from first base in the second inning, giving BYU a 2-0 lead.
