Maria Covey Cole, daughter of famed author Stephen Covey, has often found herself struggling in her duties as a mother. Meeting the needs of five children is not easy, especially when you also juggle employment and church callings. With her hectic schedule, Cole said she has sometimes wondered if motherhood is the best way to utilize her time and talents. She loves her children dearly but finds herself questioning if what she is doing really makes a difference. After some soul-searching and realizing many important aspects of the nature of motherhood, Cole has documented her experiences in a new book. \"Contentment: Inspiring Insights for LDS Mothers\" (2009 Covenant Communications) is a motivating and informative book about accepting yourself and finding peace in the eternal role of mother. According to Cole, raising children is particularly challenging for LDS mothers because many feel they \"just don't measure up.\" Women often get caught up in the \"perfection trap,\" constantly comparing themselves to neighbors and friends.Cole explains that this frame of mind is extremely counterproductive. Instead, she suggests looking at other women as allies, not as competitors. \"As mothers, we're all in this together, and we need to strengthen and support one another in our efforts,\" she said. \"We need to do more affirming and encouraging and less comparing and finding fault.\" Another principle outlined in the book is the need for women to develop their own talents and interests. Cole suggests that taking time each day to participate in things such as writing, music or reading allows women to express themselves and feel more fulfilled. Such focus should not be seen as selfish, but essential to development and happiness as a mother, Cole says. The overarching theme of Cole's book is the need for LDS women to rely on the Lord for help in finding peace and joy in motherhood. \"As I entrusted myself and my family to His care, I better understood my purpose and the importance of my role as a wife and mother,\" she writes. \"When we acknowledge His goodness and mercy in our lives, we will truly be content with the things the Lord has allotted to us.\"
