Former Salt Lake Community College and Wasatch High forward Logan Magnusson verbally committed Wednesday to play basketball next season for the BYU Cougars.

Magnusson, who helped the Wasps win two state titles and the Bruins win the national junior college championship this past season, is a 6-foot-6 forward who brings an all-around game to BYU, where he'll likely see time at both forward positions.

"I'm not the most athletic player and I'm probably not going to score 30 points a game, but if I work hard I can offer a lot to the team," Magnusson said. "I'm a good rebounder and a good defensive player, and I can score when I need to as well."

After an all-state career at Wasatch, Magnusson played one season at Dixie State before serving a two-year LDS Church mission. At SLCC this past season he averaged eight points and six rebounds per game. He shot 53 percent from the floor, 46 percent from 3-point range and 79 percent from the free-throw line. He led the Bruins with 3.5 assists per game.

"I feel really good about this decision. This is a great opportunity for me," he said.

Magnusson chose BYU, for a variety of reasons, over Southern Utah and Westminster — who recruited him heavily from the beginning of this past season. He's in the middle of finals at SLCC and won't officially sign with BYU until later this week.

The Cougar coaches cannot comment on the addition of Magnusson until he has officially signed his letter of intent. He'll take one of BYU's three available scholarships with the departure of Lee Cummard, Archie Rose and Gavin MacGregor. The other two scholarships will go to freshmen Tyler Haws, a shooting guard from Lone Peak High, and Brandon Davies, a center/forward from Provo High.
