With several recent boating deaths, Utah State Parks assistant boating program manager Chris Haller stresses the importance of being prepared for sudden storms when boaters are out on the water.
Safety tips include:
Wear your lifejacket at all times.
Keep a sharp lookout for other vessels and floating debris in the water.
Sound your horn or whistle when boating in foggy conditions.
If your vessel has more than one fuel tank, switch to a full tank.
When a storm arises, boaters should head for the nearest, approachable shore.
When heading into waves, try to do so at a 45-degree angle.
Close all hatches and windows to reduce the chance of swamping.
Reduce your boat's speed, but keep enough power to maintain headway and steering.
Secure loose items on your vessel.
If your boat's engine stops, drop anchor from the bow.
Always take along appropriate warm clothing.
Weather can change very rapidly and create unexpected situations for vessel operators. Always watch for changes in weather and be sure to monitor the weather forecast.
Also, make sure to inform a close friend or relative of where you are going and when you expect to return.
