WEST VALLEY CITY — One man was arrested and one was still on the run following a short chase Monday.
About 10:30 p.m, a West Valley police officer spotted four people acting suspiciously while getting into a vehicle near 3900 South and 2200 West, said West Valley Police Capt. Tom McLachlan. Thinking the group may have been burglarizing the car, the officer attempted to pull it over.
Instead, the car fled, but only reached speeds of 50 mph, 10 mph over the posted speed limit, McLachlan said. The fleeing vehicle turned into an apartment complex near 4000 S. Redwood Road a short time later, where it ran into a dead end.
The male passenger and driver got out and ran. Two female passengers in the back seat stayed in the car, McLachlan said. Police learned the car was registered to one of the women.
Backup officers surrounded the area and arrested the 22-year-old driver, booking him into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of felony evading and fleeing. The women were not arrested.
The search continued Monday for the male passenger who reportedly had a prior warrant out for his arrest, McLachlan said. Investigators weren't sure Monday why the group initially fled.
