How local players are expected to fare in the draft

The University of Utah had one of the best football teams in the nation last season, and now some of the players from the Sugar Bowl champions will officially move on to the next level.

Two Utes — cornerback Sean Smith and defensive end Paul Kruger — have a good shot of being drafted in the first two rounds today. The first two rounds of the draft will be held today, and it will continue on Sunday with rounds 3 through 7. If Kruger isn't picked today, he'll certainly be an early third-round pick on Sunday.

Receiver Austin Collie will likely be the first BYU player selected, and he is projected to be picked between the fourth and sixth rounds. Cougar offensive lineman Travis Bright also figures to be picked on the draft's second day.

Other Utes who have a shot at being drafted are cornerback Brice McCain and kicker Louie Sakoda. Players such as Freddie Brown, Brent Casteel, Brian Johnson and Greg Newman will likely be free-agent signees. BYU's Ray Feinga and Fui Vakapuna are hoping to be late-round picks but also may be free-agent signees following the draft.

Weber State fullback Marcus Mailei and Utah State's Robert Myers and De'Von Hall also hope to be picked.
