UTAH STATE PRISON — A $20,000 grant will be used to bolster the state's prison libraries.

The Utah Department of Corrections said the funding is part of an overall $184,000 grant awarded through the Library Service and Technology Act to fund Utah libraries. The prison at Gunnison will receive $10,000 to purchase books, software and equipment upgrades. The prison at Point of the Mountain will use its share to purchase literacy materials for use by inmates.

Corrections officials said Friday that about 65 percent of incoming inmates lack high-school diplomas, while 80 percent have reading, math or language skills below a ninth-grade level.
