Provo home may be razed

PROVO — A stately old home at 855 N. University Ave. must make way for a new condominium complex.

Unless the home can be moved, it most likely will be razed, the home's Southern California owner and developer Terry Cirac told the Provo City Council recently. The home, built in 1937, once belonged to Cirac's grandfather, he said, and sits on the west side of University Avenue, just north of 800 North, next to another condo development.

A Tudor-styled home on the south, built in 1929, is to become part of the planned Huntington Place 16-unit complex, as the manager's residence and clubhouse, Cirac said.

The project is planned as men's housing for nearby Brigham Young University. Each unit is designed to house four male students.

The concept is a revision of an earlier plan that the council rejected. Cirac reduced the condo building from three stories to two and included the home next to it in the plan to gain the council's favor. The new building is to continue the architecture of the neighborhood.

Councilwoman Sherrie Hall Everett said her hope was that the home on the corner would be moved rather than torn down.

The council also changed the zoning of the home to accommodate the project.
