SOUTH SALT LAKE — The Salt Lake City Marathon will go forward.
The South Salt Lake Police Department on Friday approved a permit for the race after delays while waiting for a $15,000 check to clear the bank. South Salt Lake's police chief had threatened to pull his 30 officers from providing security and traffic control during the race if marathon organizers Devine Racing didn't pay up.
"As far was we can tell, the check's cleared. I hated to wait until the last minute, but we had to wait so long for them to get it to us," said Chief Chris Snyder. "Good luck to the runners."
Murray police are expected to get paid today, race organizers said.
Salt Lake County approved its permit Friday after $30,000 was paid to the sheriff's office late Thursday for its part in providing security.
The financially troubled race has struggled to pay police agencies for providing security and other logistical support. Devine Racing has been accused in other states of delaying payments or, in some cases, not paying at all.
