Of approximately 25 applications turned in seeking the position of Utah's superintendent of public education, 15 are "credible" and will be considered, according to state education officials.
Thirteen candidates are male and two are female. One of the 15 is believed to be a racial minority candidate.
Nine applicants are from in-state while six are out-of-state.
State Board of Education member Denis Morrill, chairman of the superintendent search committee, said the process will be intense but "very worthwhile" in finding a proper replacement for Patti Harrington. The current state education boss announced her resignation last month, effective July 1.
The Deseret News has confirmed that deputy superintendent Larry Shumway has applied. He was one of four finalists during the 2004 search process.
Box Elder District Superintendent Martell Menlove, another 2004 finalist, told the Deseret News Friday he is not applying, although several people have encouraged him to apply again. "I'm happy where I am," he said.
Davis District Superintendent Bryan Bowles, along with Granite Superintendent Stephen Ronnenkamp, both declined to say whether they have applied. "It's private," Ronnenkamp said.
Jordan District Superintendent Barry Newbold said he is not applying for two reasons: He likes his current job, and he wants to see the district through its division transition. "This is a very critical time for the district," he said. "And I'm happy where I am, so I'm not throwing my hat into the ring."
Ogden District Superintendent Noel Zabriskie said he didn't apply, also saying he is pleased with his current position.
Weber District Superintendent Michael Jacobsen didn't apply. "I have a great job right now," he said.
Park City Superintendent Ray Timothy, another finalist in 2004, didn't return phone calls. Timothy was state associate superintendent for law, legislation and educational services in 2004.
The search committee will begin sifting through the applications and decide by April 24 which candidates are to be interviewed by the committee on May 13, after which the finalists will be announced publicly.
A final round of interviews by board members is scheduled for May 29. The board plans to announce the new hire June 5.
