Geothermal plant delivering power

MINERSVILLE — A 10-megawatt geothermal plant in Utah's west desert began delivering electricity Thursday to its sole customer, the city of Anaheim, Calif.

Raser Technologies Inc. of Provo says it fired up the plant about 15 miles west of Minersville in Beaver County, where the company drilled into an underground hot-water system. The plant provides enough power for 7,000 homes.

The company holds rights to 78 square miles of land in the area and believes it has barely tapped the full potential of a geothermal resource.

Anaheim confirmed it was receiving the geothermal power. A spokeswoman for the municipal power agency says it partly owns some of the transmission lines that span Utah to California. It also takes some of Utah's coal-fired power.
