ST. GEORGE — Dixie Downs Elementary school is looking for a new name.

The school has petitioned the Washington County School District to rename the campus Dixie Sol Elementary.

"Sol" is Spanish for sun. Dixie Downs is home to the district's only dual-immersion program with classes taught in both English and Spanish.

Laura Najera, a parent and member of the Parent-Teacher Association, says the proposed name was picked by parents, faculty and the PTA. She says they believe the new name would better reflect the nature of the school and its students. The current name honors a horse-racing track.

The board hasn't yet made a decision. The school also wants the district to allow it to operate on a year-round calendar.
