Perlich noted that U.S. population growth for most of its history has been fueled by immigration. It was only during the mid-1900s that stringent immigration laws and the "baby boomers" temporarily tipped the scales toward a whiter, more homogenous growth pattern.

Community meeting to discuss Utah's immigration laws

Sen. Luz Robles, D-Salt Lake City, Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank and others are scheduled to speak at a community meeting Wednesday to discuss Utah's new immigration laws and other issues affecting the Latino community.

Hosted by the Latino Community Center, organizers hope to provide the opportunity for law enforcement and other state and local agencies to discuss new immigration enforcement provisions created by 2008's SB81, set to take effect July 1.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at Latino Mall, 2470 S. Redwood Road.
