Potential candidates applying for the position of state education boss may run into a problem if they have procrastinated mailing their application: all documents must be postmarked by 5 p.m. Wednesday — Tax Day.

State Board of Education member Denis Morrill, chairman of the superintendent search committee, said they didn't do it on purpose. It's just part of the timeline.

So far the State Office of Education has received approximately 25 applications and numerous inquiries from in-state and out-of-state potential candidates.

Morrill said there are some strong applicants and others, lacking qualifications, are simply "wishful thinking."

Preliminary screenings will be finished April 24. Committee interviews will commence May 13, after which the few finalists will be announced publicly.

A final round of interviews by board members is scheduled for May 29. The board plans to announce the new hire June 5.

State Superintendent Patti Harrington announced her retirement March 6, effective July 1.
