PROVO — BYU seniors Jan Jorgensen and Matt Bauman have been named to the 2009 Lott Trophy Watch List consisting of 42 of the nation's top defensive players who make an impact both on and off the playing field.
BYU is one of four schools to have two players recognized on the list along with Alabama, Georgia and UCLA. In all, players from 38 different schools made the list. TCU defensive end Jerry Hughes joins Jorgensen and Bauman representing the Mountain West Conference on the list.
A quarterfinalist for the award last year, Jorgensen is one of 14 repeat nominees in 2009, the most in the six years of the award. A defensive end, Jorgensen was an ARA Sportsmanship Award finalist last year and enters his final season as the MWC's career sacks leader. The Helper, Utah, native has earned All-MWC First Team honors each of the past two seasons.
Bauman is one of 28 newcomers to make the list in 2009. The Salt Lake City native started all 13 games for BYU in 2008 and was the team's top tackler with 108 takedowns. Bauman was also one of three Cougars to earn the distinction of being a first-team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American in 2008.
