OHV SAFETY URGED

As the weather warms and riders head out on off-highway vehicles, Utah State Park managers remind everyone to ride safely and responsibly. Riders should be properly trained and prepared, and ride in a responsible manner.

All OHVs must display a current OHV registration sticker when operated or transported on public lands or roads. Off-highway motorcycles may be registered as street legal if they are safety inspected and insured. OHV registration fees go back into the sport. Of the $20.50 collected from each registration, $13.50 is dedicated to the improvement of summer and winter OHV opportunities.

Utah State Parks urges parents to enroll children in a "Know Before You Go!" training course, which is required by Utah law. By passing this course, drivers ages 8 through 16 may legally operate an OHV.

To register for "Know Before You Go!" classes or for information on OHV laws and riding areas, contact the OHV Information Center at 801-538-7433 from within Salt Lake City, or 800-OHV-RIDE (435-648-7433) from outside the area.

COLD WATER DANGERS

As ice begins to melt off reservoirs, Utah State Parks boating officials remind everyone to be aware of sudden spring storms and cold water temperatures.

"You never know when you might end up in the water. Life jackets not only keep you afloat, but provide an extra layer of warmth," said assistant boating program manager Chris Haller. "The combination of additional heat and flotation might mean the difference between life and death."

Haller recommends these cold water boating safety tips:

Have a ladder or a method to reboard your boat.

Carry a signaling device, such as a mirror or flare gun.

Carry a cell phone or marine band radio with service where you boat.

Always tell someone your boating plans including where you are going and what time you will return.

Check local weather conditions before heading out.

Carry proper equipment onboard your boat.
