Cardinal Edward Egan, the archbishop of New York, is scheduled to undergo surgery this morning to receive a pacemaker.

New York Archdiocese spokesman Joe Zwilling says Egan went to St. Vincent's Hospital with stomach pain. After he underwent tests, doctors determined that he needs a pacemaker.

Zwilling says Egan was awake and alert when he arrived at the hospital Saturday night. He is expected to remain there until Tuesday. It's unclear if he will be able to take part in any Holy Week activities.

The 77-year-old Egan is retiring from his influential post this month. The archdiocese serves 2.5 million Catholics in about 400 parishes. Egan has led it for nearly nine years.

Timothy Dolan, currently the archbishop of Milwaukee, will succeed him.
