One dead, one hurt in rollover on I-70

One person was killed and another seriously injured in a rollover accident Saturday evening on I-70.

Utah Highway Patrol spokesman Brian Hyer said Sunday that the driver of the vehicle, traveling with five passengers, may have been driving too fast for the snow and icy road conditions just outside of Green River when he lost control, slid into the median and rolled his SUV several times just after 9:30 p.m.

One passenger, 16-year-old Octavio Rivas, was the only person not wearing a seat-belt, and he was ejected in the rollover. Rivas was transported in critical condition to Castleview Hospital in Price where he later died. Another passenger, a 20-year-old female, was also transported with a leg injury, but Hyer said she was doing well Sunday and is expected to make a full recovery.

Hyer said he believed all six people were related and traveling from Mexico to Nebraska.

Woman hospitalized after crash on I-15

One woman needed to be extricated by emergency crews Saturday evening after the car she was riding in collided with a vehicle that drove into oncoming traffic on I-15 near Brigham City.

Utah Highway Patrol spokesman Brian Hyer said Sunday that investigators are still trying to determine why a 20-year-old man from Garland, traveling north on I-15 near an area known as the "cement plant," drove through the median and into the southbound lanes, where he was struck by another vehicle about 8:45 p.m.

Hyer said the man and the driver of the other vehicle both sustained minor injuries in the accident. A 41-year-old woman who was a passenger in the southbound vehicle was trapped after the collision. She was flown to McKay-Dee Hospital Center in Ogden with a broken femur after she was rescued from inside the car.
