Newlywed charged with killing wife, 73

JEROME, Pa. (AP) — A 73-year-old western Pennsylvania man was charged with killing his 73-year-old wife after authorities said he was upset by her decision to end their marriage of just a few weeks.

Relatives found the body of Ruth Anne Henderson-McTonic on the back porch of her home Friday, police said. She had been shot twice in the chest with a .22-caliber firearm.

William McTonic, of Jerome, is charged with homicide. He was arrested in nearby Somerset after he was pulled over by police Friday and is in the Somerset County Jail.

Conemaugh Township police chief Pete Barclay said the couple had been married for only a few weeks and were living in different residences.

2 aid workers are kidnapped in Darfur

DARFUR, Sudan (Bloomberg) — Two members of a French aid group were kidnapped by unidentified armed men during the night in Sudan's conflict-ridden Darfur region.

The workers from Aide Medicale Internationale were kidnapped from Ed el Fursan, in southern Darfur, the organization said on its Web site.

"Aide Medicale Internationale vigorously denounces this kidnapping directed against members of its team, who work daily to preserve the health of local populations," the group said.

The French Foreign Ministry said in a statement that its crisis center is mobilized and in contact with the group and relevant parties.

Crash of WWII-era plane investigated

MELVILLE, N.Y. (MCT) — Multiple agencies are investigating a single-engine plane crash in which the pilot of a World War II-era plane died when his aircraft went down near Mastic Beach Sunday afternoon, Coast Guard and Suffolk County police officials said.

Coast Guard officials have said the pilot was the only person aboard the aircraft. Witnesses said the plane appeared to be doing aerial maneuvers when it went down.

The plane flew from Brookhaven Airport and crashed 300 yards offshore, approximately three-quarters of a mile from a park office near a campground, officials said.

4 nabbed in Mexico after convoy attack

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Four men are under arrest for allegedly attacking a Mexican governor's convoy, killing one of his bodyguards and wounding two agents.

Gunmen fired at a vehicle two cars behind the one carrying Chihuahua state Gov. Jose Reyes Baeza on Feb. 22.
