Jazz trio unites for S.L. fans
Alexander, Clayton, Hamilton to play at Sheraton jazz series
Three old friends will greet fans April 6 as the trio Alexander-Clayton-Hamilton take the Sheraton series stage for 2009 Jazz.
The group — pianist Monty Alexander, bassist John Clayton and percussionist Jeff Hamilton — have played together for four decades.
But over the years, the three have gone on to form their own groups, leaving little time to tour together.
Alexander-Clayton-Hamilton was formed in the 1970s, and they toured together in North America and Europe, performing, writing and impressing wherever they went.
"It was such an impact on each of us, and we are well-remembered for that association," Alexander said during an interview with the Deseret News, adding that people always ask him when the group will play together again.
Although they still manage to get together a few times a year, each has a busy schedule and a slate of other projects.
Alexander says he keeps a schedule busy enough for three people, making it a struggle to find time to perform with Hamilton and Clayton.
"That's a bit of a challenge (but) we have got to do it every once in a while," Alexander said.
Individually, the three are always in demand at festivals and clubs, and their recordings are met with enthusiasm. But the three love to jam together as often as they can.
"We have this thing ... we call a difference. You can never explain what it is, a musical quotient. There a lot of joy, a lot of good feelings. I love them (Hamilton and Clayton) personally, I love them musically," Alexander said.
Clayton and Hamilton have already appeared on the Sheraton stage this season, but it's been awhile since Alexander was here.
"I've got to say it from the heart, there is a cleaner society in Salt Lake City," Alexander said. "It is less affected by the distractions of those big cities. People there (Salt Lake City) are ripe for the picking. When a good thing comes along there's an amazing response."
