Imagine Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Shall We Dance," as a comic pas de deux; or how about "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria" sung by a lovelorn young lad?
Thoughtful rethinking of some of the greatest musical theater contributions, is what makes "A Grand Night for Singing" so much fun.
The revue, which runs April 10-18 at StageRight TheaterCompany, Village Green, 395 S. State, Clearfield, is an homage to the great composing duo, Rodgers and Hammerstein.
The musical opened on Broadway in 1994 and is filled with classic — as well as lesser-known — R&H gems such as "The Surrey With the Fringe on Top," "The Gentleman Is a Dope," "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair," and many more. It stars Beth Barret, Catherine Carlson, Dan Christensen, Barbara Christensen, Jennifer Crabb, Gordon Jones, Nancy Merrill and Russ Merrill.
Shows nights vary, 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $7-$10 (801-272-3445)
Here are the rest of this week's openings:
"Charley's Aunt," April 6-May 2, Rodgers Memorial Theatre, 292 E. Pages Lane, Centerville.
Love triangle, mistaken identities and classic British wit make for a very funny evening. When this three-act play first debuted, it broke all records for plays of any kind.
Shows are nightly, except Sunday, 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $9-$16 (801-298-1302 or www.rodgersmemorial.com)
"I Ought to Be in Pictures," Utah Theatre Artists Company, April 10-25, Disabled Veterans Center, 279 E. 800 South.
This Neil Simon comedy/drama, Simon's 18th play, will be the start of a new semi-professional status at Utah Theatre Artists.
Beginning as an all-volunteer company, they'll now be paying actors involved with their shows.
In the play, you'll meet Libby, a 19 year-old actress in search of ... her long-lost dad — a screen writer. She's hoping he'll make up for years of neglect by helping her break into the business. The show stars Jeff Owen, Tamara Johnson-Howell and Kelsie Jepsen.
Shows are Fridays and Saturdays, 8 p.m., with Saturday matinees available. Tickets are $10 (801-842-7483 or www.utahtheatreartists.com)
"Madwoman of Chaillot," April 9-18, Chase Fine Arts Center, 1110 E. 610 North, Utah State University, Logan.
