HURRICANE — A body has been found in a burned out car near here.

Someone called 911 about 6 a.m. Thursday to report a vehicle fire in the remote area of Smith's Mesa, Washington County sheriff's deputies said.

"By the time we got there it was pretty much burned out," Washington County sheriff's detective Nate Abbott said Thursday. "But there was a body inside. We don't know if it's male or female."

The sheriff's office said the vehicle is a KIA sport utility vehicle, possibly red or maroon in color. The identity of the person is unknown and the cause of the fire is being investigated. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact detectives with the Washington County Sheriff's Office at 435-656-6500.
