Wind turbine will cut energy costs

CEDAR CITY (AP) — A new wind turbine at Three Peaks Elementary in Cedar City is teaching students about renewable energy and will save the school about 20 percent on energy costs each year.

The turbine project is being sponsored by Rocky Mountain Power's renewable energy program, Utah Clean Energy and the Utah State Energy Program.

Clay Carter, the school's fourth-grade science curriculum specialist, says students will be able to track on the school Web site how much energy is put out by the turbine, which was unveiled at the school last week.

Carter says the school was chosen to host the turbine because it has enough space and there is a lot of wind in the area.

Iron County School District Superintendent Jim Johnson says the turbine enhances the school's already energy-efficient reputation.
