Now that the Final Four has been determined, it's time to talk about … college football, of course. We'll get to basketball in a minute, however …
It's always exciting to see new schedules, and the Mountain West Conference football schedules came out a little earlier than usual the other day. And with spring football going on around the state, it's fun to think about football season to take our minds off the way the four major college basketball teams in the state fizzled in the postseason.
After going 9-5 last year against BCS conferences, the MWC is unlikely to match last year's mark with eight of this year's 14 games on the road, one on a neutral field and one of the home games against Texas.
Breaking down the league schedule, MWC teams play opponents from each of the six BCS conferences with six against the Big 12, three against the Pac-10, two against the ACC and one each against the others.
The most likely wins this year will be Louisville at Utah and TCU's games against Virginia and Clemson. BYU's home game with Florida State and UNLV's home game against Oregon State are good possibilities, but the rest, Air Force at Minnesota, CSU and Wyoming at Colorado, New Mexico at Texas A&M and Texas Tech, Utah at Oregon, San Diego State at UCLA, Texas at Wyoming and BYU vs. Oklahoma will be difficult games. Right now, it looks like a 5-9 record might be good …
How in the heck did Wyoming get Texas to come to Laramie, anyway? …
The most noticeable thing about the MWC schedules was the lack of Thursday night games. Except for Utah's opener with Utah State to avoid the Labor Day weekend and BYU's annual Friday game with the Aggies, both Utah and BYU have all Saturday games for the first time in at least a decade. While those Thursday games give the league some extra exposure, it's great having all the games played on the day college football games are meant to be played …
Turning to basketball, isn't it nice not to have four No. 1 seeds as we did for last year's Final Four? Nothing against the top seeds, but there have been so few upsets in the NCAA Tournament this year that it's refreshing to see a few underdogs win …
I'm happy for Michigan State knocking off top seed Louisville and getting to the Final Four in its home state later this week. However, now we're going to hear even more Tom Izzo stories from Ute coach Jim Boylen next year …
