"From an artistic standpoint, the Equity model was successful," said Judy Brophy, the board's vice president. "But the model's expenses were significant, and it limited the types of shows and the number of nights we could perform."
With the end of the Equity relationship, Groy says it allows the theater to more freely choose what shows to produce and how long they run.
"The new focus will be on shorter runs for our shows, more touring shows, and more Youtheatre programs," Groy said. He also noted that the board is looking into film nights and other projects.
"We've adjusted the shows and the budgets to try to be profitable," Groy said. "If you can't fill the theater, you've got to do something different."
Above all, everyone seems to agree on one thing: Concern for the theater company's future.
In his e-mail, Goodman wrote: "I do wish them the very best at keeping the doors open, at the very least, until this recession subsides."
Groy thanked Goodman and the theater's staff for their service, as well as the donors and volunteers.
"This new evolution should help us to go on with the show for another 85 years."
The board is looking for more feedback from the community and will host a town hall meeting, May 4, 6 p.m., at the theater, 328 Main, Park City.
