KANAB (AP) — Ernst Paul Eckhoff, one of the founders of Best Friends Animal Society in southern Utah, has died in a car accident.
Utah Highway Patrol trooper Cameron Roden says Eckhoff, a 72-year-old Kanab resident, died at the scene of the Tuesday accident.
Roden says it appears Eckhoff's Land Rover drifted off the left side of the two-lane road and he overcorrected, causing the vehicle to roll 1 1/2 times.
Eckhoff was alone in the vehicle and was wearing a seat belt.
Best Friends is located five miles north of Kanab. The no-kill shelter houses about 1,700 animals.
