Emma and Joseph Smith's first child was a boy who died at or shortly after his birth. The date was June 15, 1828. There have been differences of opinion with regard to the child's name. Larry C. Porter writes that, according to a family Bible, the infant's name was Alvin, presumably after the Prophet's brother, who died in 1827. The headstone is located in the McKune Cemetery near the Harmony, Pa., home site of Joseph and Emma Smith. The graves of Emma Smith's parents, Isaac and Elizabeth Hale, are located a few yards to the north of little Alvin. In the photo above, the child's grave marker is the prominent one located at the far left.
