The state health department says the number of Utah women having abortions was slightly higher in 2007 than the year before.

There were 3,516 abortions in 2007, 72 more than in 2006. Most of the women having abortions were unmarried and most had a high school diploma or less in education.

Utah doctors also performed 400 abortions in 2007 for out-of-state women, mostly from Idaho, Wyoming and Nevada.

Lawmakers passed two abortion bills this legislative session. One bill makes abortions illegal if performed after the fetus could live outside the womb. The other would require doctors to offer fetal anesthesia for abortions where the fetus is at least 20 weeks old.

The bills are awaiting action by Gov. Jon Huntsman.
