Weber County looks for new prosecutor

OGDEN — Weber County is looking for a new prosecutor.

Weber County Attorney Mark DeCaria has been confirmed as a 2nd District Court judge, leaving an opening for his soon-to-be former job.

DeCaria is the only Democrat to hold office in county government. Weber County Democrats will be contacting potential candidates to succeed DeCaria and notifying them that the application deadline is April 6.

DeCaria, whose judicial nomination was confirmed by the Utah Senate last week, said he will not be involved in choosing his successor.

"I'll be interested to see who applies," he said.

Steve Olsen, vice chairman of the county's Democratic Party, said the party's central committee will likely meet in mid-April to review the applicants.

The party mailed out a first round of inquiries in mid-February, but only three candidates have committed their interest. At that time, DeCaria's nomination hadn't been confirmed, so party officials hope there will be more response before the April deadline.

The central committee will vote on three names to forward to the county commission, which will select DeCaria's replacement. Party officials have stressed that the nominees will have to convince the central committee that after completing the remaining two years of the term, they will run for re-election as a Democrat.

"We want a promise," Olsen said.

DeCaria plans to meet with his staff next week to discuss the interim as he takes over for retiring Judge Roger Dutson.
