"Paying attention to how the light falls on a subject is the single most important part of a photograph. Full sun is usually harsh light. Finding open shade is ideal. Using overhangs from buildings works well also."

"Try and avoid centered compositions. Professional photographers follow the 'rule of thirds.' Imagine a grid placed over a photograph that divides the photograph into three parts both horizontally and vertically. Photographers strive to ensure that the focus of the photograph falls on one of these lines and not in the center of the photo."

What are common mistakes people make when photographing children or pets?

"The most common mistake is only taking one or two photos. Shoot, shoot, shoot. The more photos you take, the better your odds of getting one or two photos that completely rock."

Story continues below

"Let your child or your pet be themselves. The photo of your dog rolled over, upside down in the grass with his tongue lolling out of his mouth or the picture of your child in a diaper and rain boots playing in the puddle on the driveway are among the best because they are real and those captured moments are a little insight into that special person or furry friend's soul."

"Having a barbecue in the backyard? Giving the dog a bath with the hose? Flying a kite? Baking brownies? All of these are common occurrences that provide great photo opportunities. Hang out with your camera."

What advice would you give to someone who wants to take better pictures?

"Take LOTS and LOTS of photos. Let the moment happen. Take your camera with you on daily activities. And most importantly, have fun. Photography rocks."

Are there any cameras you would recommend a parent buy?

"For someone starting out in photography, I would recommend a Canon Digital Rebel XS or XSi. They are SLRs, which means that you can interchange your lenses. Both cameras have programmed settings that allow them to be as easy as a point and click camera but they also have the flexibility to be shot in manual, or somewhere in between."
