DownEast looks to expand
Despite the nation's struggling economy, Utah-based DownEast Basics says it is thriving and plans to open its newly remodeled Provo store on March 13.
Plans are also being finalized for DownEast to expand into two additional states. The clothing retailer already has shops in Arizona, Idaho and Washington state.
Andrea Updike, the design director for DownEast, said she believes the company is succeeding because of its branding and market strategy. Its clothing is low-cost but high-quality and appeals to a variety of ages, she said.
"We really try to make sure our basics hit a wide variety of ages and style choices," Updike said. "Our line isn't just concentrated on one age group or style or modesty perspective."
Some of the company's best-selling items include its line of basic T-shirts and undershirts. Most are sold in the $10 range.
DownEast also sells various "fashion" items each season, including skirts and tops for prices around $25-$30. On April 15, it plans to release its summer line.
Updike said she anticipates some top trends this year will include the color yellow and also skirts and blouses with ruffles. In addition, she said the company will continue to offer top-selling items in colors such as white, black, cream and brown.
She says women should be able to find something at DownEast to fit their needs. Each season, skirts and tops are coordinated so colors match, so a woman on a budget could get a new outfit for under $40, according to Updike.
"You will find something that looks good for you," she said.
