CENTERVILLE — Police have arrested three generations of a family they say made crime a bonding experience.
A man, his son and his grandson were all arrested Saturday after officers responded to a vehicle burglary at Iggy's Sports Grill, 782 W. Parrish Lane, where a car window had been broken and a purse had been stolen. Surveillance cameras gave police a vehicle, and officers put out an alert for the suspects.
"A Bountiful officer went to a parking lot of a restaurant where they'd had vehicle burglaries before on a hunch," Centerville Police Lt. Paul Child said Tuesday. "As he was pulling into the area, the vehicle was pulling out."
The officer stopped the car and found 49-year-old Donald J. Madrid, his son, 31-year-old Joshua J. Madrid Sr., and a 14-year-old grandson, Child said.
"In the car also were several stolen purses and various other stolen property and burglary tools," he said.
Police said both Madrids have long histories of arrests for burglary. Child said detectives were working Tuesday to see if the men were behind dozens of vehicle burglaries in the south Davis County area.
Under questioning, Child said the 14-year-old told detectives crime was a family business.
"He actually stated this was how they made their money to survive," he said. "It's definitely disturbing. Where it's three generations, a father, son and grandson, we are very concerned about this 14-year-old and the environment he's growing up in."
The 14-year-old was taken to Farmington Bay Youth Detention Center. His father and grandfather were booked into the Davis County Jail. Donald and Joshua Madrid were charged in 2nd District Court on Monday with third-degree felony theft, identity theft, possession of a credit card and misdemeanor vehicle burglary, possession of burglary tools and criminal mischief. Both men are scheduled for court appearances later this month.
