SILVER SUMMIT, Summit County — A Kamas man accused in a road rage incident during a bicycle race has struck a plea deal with prosecutors.
During an appearance here in 3rd District Court on Monday, Alexander Jason Barto, 41, pleaded guilty to a single third-degree felony count of aggravated assault. In exchange, court records show Summit County prosecutors dropped another assault charge and nine misdemeanor counts of operating a vehicle near a bicycle.
On Aug. 2, Shane Dunleavy said he was run off the road while participating in a race along the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway. Other cyclists accused Barto of trying to run them off the road. Dunleavy told the Deseret News last year "he screamed at us that we didn't belong on the road." Dunleavy suffered road rash, bruises and minor cuts. His bicycle was destroyed.
Barto will be sentenced April 27.
