ANTELOPE ISLAND — The National Transportation Safety Board has begun its investigation into what caused a deadly plane crash on Antelope Island.
In a preliminary report released Monday, the NTSB said the amateur-built Stephenson Zodiac plane crashed on a mountain on March 3 about 20 minutes into its flight from Tooele to Bountiful. Kirk Babbit, 37, was killed in the crash.
The NTSB did not give any indications of the cause of the crash, but said in its report that damage to the aircraft was "substantial" and the wind speed was about 17 knots (about 20 miles per hour). On the day of the crash, strong winds were hitting the Wasatch Front.
A final report on the crash is expected sometime within the next year.
