A bill that requires school boards to enact gang prevention and intervention policies passed the Senate on Monday with a 24-3 vote.

Sen. Luz Robles, D-Salt Lake, sponsor of SB74, said, "This is all coordinating with law enforcement."

Sen. Pat Jones, D-Holladay, pointed out the bill contains great ideas that can be done without the legislation. "Why do we need this bill?" Jones said.

Robles said gang prevention actually isn't happening. "Gangs are everywhere — Payson, Washington County, Weber County," she said.

The bill now goes to the House.
