BYU

BASEBALL: Brock Whitney's walk-off single to left field sent Stetson Banks across home plate in BYU's 8-7 extra-inning win over St. John's on Saturday at Provo. The victory came after a 7-6 win in the first game of the day's doubleheader. With the wins, the Cougars improve to 7-6 on the season.

Banks led the Cougars with three runs, going 4-of-6 from the plate in the nightcap. Sophomore Justin Shutt secured was the beneficiary on the mound in relief, securing his first win of the season.

In Saturday's earlier game, Kent Walton recorded three hits, two RBI and two runs, including a solo homer, for BYU. Blake Torgerson was credited with the victory in the opener, improving his season record to 1-2.

The Cougars resume play on Tuesday, when they host Southern Utah at 3 p.m.

SOFTBALL: The Cougars fell at the hands of No. 9 Cal, 4-2, after leading through four innings of play at the Bayer Cropscience Classic on Saturday. Earlier in the day, the Cougars defeated Northern Illinois 10-1, leaving BYU 14-1 on the season.

Sophomore Jessica Purcell and junior Andrea Ramirez each had RBIs against Cal.

Earlier in the day, sophomore Paige Affleck (8-5, 1.53) started the game against Northern Illinois, striking out nine Northern Illinois batters, giving up one run on two hits. Freshman Delaney Willard was 2-for-2 with three RBIs, and Coreen Lopez went 2-for-2 with two doubles. Ramirez added to the effort with a three-run homer, and Purcell smacked a two-run shot.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: After three matches in three days, the Cougars completed their perfect weekend record with a 6-1 win over Oklahoma State on Saturday at Stillwater, Okla. With the win, the Cougars improve to 7-5 and extend their winning streak to four matches.

MEN'S TENNIS: The Cougars closed out the HEB Invitational on Saturday with a 4-1 loss to Middle Tennessee. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 8-6, while Middle Tennessee improves to 7-6.

UTAH

BASEBALL: The Utes earned their first shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory over No. 4 Texas A&M on Saturday at College Station, Texas.
