2009 is the sesquicentennial of Freemasonry in Utah.
The first Masonic Lodge in Utah was organized on March 6, 1859.
Utah state government is expected to recognize the anniversary with special proclamations.
The mission of Freemasonry is to teach and perpetuate a way of life that promotes brotherhood, self improvement through education, family values, moral standards, charity and community involvement. The Masonic Foundation of Utah contributes more than $250,000 a year to local charities.
There are 28 Masonic lodges in the state from Logan to St. George and two other special lodges.
The Masonic Foundation of Utah, authorized by Grand Lodge at its 57th Annual Communication, was incorporated Feb. 13, 1929 as a nonprofit, tax-exempt corporation.
