High school basketball: Hoops Picks winners announced

Seven Deseretnews.com readers won $50 and a Deseret News Hoops Picks T-shirt this past weekend for their prognosticating skills in the Hoops Picks Contest. Forty-two runners-up also won T-shirts.

5A GIRLS: Of the 76 entrants, only John Johnson of Monroe picked 14 of 15 games correctly to win the grand prize. Runner-ups were: Jeane Knudsvig, South Jordan; Ron Perkins, West Valley City; Todd Wood, Herriman; Larry Kennedy, Randolph; Kiera Andreasen, Brigham City; Stephanie Ormsby, Perry.

4A GIRLS: Brant Andreasen of Brigham City was one of two contestants to pick 12 of 15 games correctly and won the tie breaker by picking the correct champion. Runners-up were: Jacob Hoopes, Midvale; Neal Lutz, Provo; Kristine Lowell, Provo; Cory Collard, West Valley City; Curtis Eliason, Cedar City; Jeane Knudsvig, South Jordan.

3A GIRLS: Travis Thompson of Roosevelt picked all 15 games correctly, the only person to do so out of 97 entries. Runners-up were: Nathan Aagard, Fountain Green; Jason Giles, Castle Dale; Janna Kennedy, Randolph; John Nielson, Stansbury Park; Lacy Ballard, Benson; Jennifer Hill, West Jordan.

3A BOYS: Only two of the 217 contestents picked 13 games correctly, but Bountiful's Lance Mercer was only five points off the final score. Runners-up were: Ethan Hamilton, Pleasant Grove; Zachary Christensen, Tremonton; Randy Blackburn, Annabella; Nathan Bunn, Gardland; Shane Heath, Stansbury Park; Jay Smith, Pleasant Grove.

2A GIRLS: Three of the 174 contestants picked 14 of the 15 points correctly, but Salina's Gary Harrison picked the most quarterfinal games correctly to win the grand prize. Runners-up were: Lacy Ballard, Benson; Larry Kennedy, Randolph; Joseph Mitchell, Blanding; Sally Reay, Orem; Sara Oyler, Cedar City; Seth Whittaker, Richfield.

2A BOYS: Of the 226 entries, Fountain Green's Brett Lovell was the only person to pick all 15 games correctly to win the grand prize. Runners-up were: Dustin Greenhalgh, Washington; Wesley Richins, Henefer; Cecil Seright, Cedar City; Jerr Ratchet, Park City; Jana Ross, Coalville; Chad Cornia, Woodruff.

1A GIRLS: Three of the 193 contestants picked 14 of 15 games correctly, but Duchesne's Realyn Patterson came closest to the final score to win the grand prize. Runners-up were: Brady Syrett, Bryce Canyon; Kerry Garfield, Henefer; Tiffany Nielsen, Tabiona; Tena Gines, Tabiona; Dane Rhoades, Tabiona; Lee Gines, Tabiona.
