A legislative committee has approved a bill that would ban the use of cell phones while driving.
HB95, sponsored by Rep. Phil Riesen, D-Salt Lake City, would make talking on a cell phone, sending text messages or using two way radios a class C misdemeanor.
Exceptions would be made for reporting criminal activity, requesting assistance or reporting road hazards.
The bill cleared a House committee Monday 5-3 and will be debated further on the House floor.
